What the NFL Roster Cuts mean for Players and Teams

The NFL roster cuts are a crucial moment in the league’s calendar, where teams finalize their 53-man rosters for the regular season. This day falls at the end of the preseason, usually in late August or early September. This year the rosters have to finalized by August 27th 2024. It’s a day of high tension and stress, as many players face uncertainty about their futures in the league.

On „Cut“ Day, NFL teams must reduce their rosters from 90 players (the offseason limit) to 53. This means that hundreds of players are released in a single day. There are 3 types of Roster Cuts:

  • Veteran Cuts: These involve releasing more experienced players. The release is often due to performance, salary cap considerations, or the emergence of younger talent.
  • Waiver Cuts: Younger players with less than four years of service are subject to waivers. This means other teams can claim them before they become free agents.
  • Injury Settlements: Players injured during the preseason may reach a settlement with the team and be released with a financial package.

A coach or front office member typically contacts players about to be released, instructing them to bring their playbook, usually on an iPad. The player then has a brief conversation with the head coach explaining the release, followed by discussions with the rest of the coaching staff and saying goodbyes.

Getting cut doesn’t always mean the end of a player’s NFL journey. Though being released can be a setback, it often opens up opportunities on other teams, which may sign released players who fit their needs or add them to a practice squad.

Practice squad after Cut

After Cut Day, teams can sign up to 16 players to their practice squads. Practice squad players are not part of the active roster, but practice with the team and can be promoted to the main roster during the season if needed. The practice squad is a critical tool for player development. It offers younger or less experienced players a chance to continue improving their skills. This can potentially earn them a spot on the active roster. During the season the practice squad plays the role of the scout team. They simulate the opponent teams plays to prepare the starters for this weeks game.

For teams, Cut Day is about balancing talent, depth, and salary cap considerations. Coaches and general managers must make tough decisions, often parting with players they’ve worked closely with throughout the offseason. The goal is to build a roster that can compete at the highest level while also maintaining flexibility for injuries or strategic adjustments.

The roster cuts in the NFL are a pivotal time that shapes the season ahead. For players, it’s a day of uncertainty but also one of opportunity. For teams, it’s about making the final decisions that could make or break their season. Whether players find themselves on a new team, signed to a practice squad, or waiting for the next opportunity, this day is a defining moment in their careers.
